THE TECHNICAL PANEL

The Good Self Build Guide was researched, prepared and written by members of the WSSBT Technical Panel. The Panel meets several times a year to study and learn about the current issues facing community builders, by visiting completed self build projects and other completed Segal method buildings, and by meeting their builders and occupants.

Comparisons are drawn with modern 'traditions' of development procurement, and the resulting quality of the built environment assessed.

The issues examined by the

Technical Panel range from planning and financing, to construction systems and specification, with particular emphasis being placed upon development methods which are safer to build and live in, for both the (self) builders and the planet, environmentally.

The authors of the various sections of the Good Self Build Guide are as follows:

Introduction by Brian Richardson, WSSBT trustee and architect (and co-author with Jon Broome of The Self Build Book)

The Site by Pat Borer, architect (and co-author with Cindy Harris, below, of 'Out of The Woods' and 'The Whole House Book')

Energy in Buildings by Cindy Harris, builder at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales (and co-author with Pat Borer of the books above)

Building Maintenance: the life and death of buildings by Duncan Roberts, architect

The good Self Build Guide was first published in 1999. It is hoped to publish further sections in 2000.
